Elizabeth Man Gets 11 Years For Killing 22-Year-Old Woman In Fatal Hit, Run Crash: Prosecutors

A 32-year-old Elizabeth man was sentenced to 11 years in state prison on Thursday, Feb. 8, for fatally striking a woman in the city and fleeing the scene in Aug. 2020, authorities said.

At 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 20, 2020, Elizabeth police responded to the Oakwood Apartment Complex on a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle, Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel, Elizabeth Police Director Earl Graves, and Elizabeth Police Chief Giacomo Sacca said. Upon arrival, found, Janaya Bailey, 22, who was transported to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead, authorities said.

An investigation revealed Hassan Kennedy pulled out of a parking spot, striking Bailey and then leaving the scene, authorities said. Kennedy was convicted of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and vehicular homicide, authorities said.
